Letters

The versatile genre of the letter performs many functions—both in personal and public life. We'll read (and write) different letters in this course.

Letters and essays are different, and they should look different, even from a distance. As writers, delivery/document design are important (and potentially fun!). Learn to make your letters look like a letter:

Follow appropriate document design (see "more" links below for details):

    • include an opening and closing;

    • single-space, with an extra space between paragraphs;

    • include multiple paragraphs that help readers follow ideas and shifts in topic;

    • sign your letter!

Lines represent dense text on a page, formatted with letterhead, and opening, and a closing and signature to look like a letter.
