Welcome, students. My name is Mike Greenberg, and I'll be your instructor for MATH 70.
This is a late-start class that only meets for 12 weeks. Because we have to cover 17.5 weeks' worth of material in only 12 weeks, this course moves at an accelerated pace! While it is a 3-unit course, it feels more like a 4-5 unit course because of how much we need to cover each week. I expect most students to spend approximately 10 hours outside of class each week working on studying, homework, seeing a tutor if needed, and reviewing for exams. Please make sure you are setting aside enough time so that you can succeed. Many students struggle with late-start classes because of poor time-management skills.
Note that we will be using a textbook that's accessed through WebAssign, which costs students approximatly $50 for the semester. If you have financial aid or a book voucher, you can apply this toward the cost.
Also, each student will need a scientific calculator. I recommend the TI-30XIIS, which can usually be found for under $20. You can also borrow a scientific calculator from the library if this cost is prohibitive.
Please note that students are not allowed to use calculators that calculate combinations and permutations. If your calculator has any of the following buttons, you cannot use it for quizzes or tests:
nCr
nPr
The following is an example of a calculator has these buttons (right under the button that says "data"). This sort of calculator is not allowed because it does some of the calculations for you that I want to see you writing out.
