ESL 75 Online
Course Information: ESL 75 A, B, & C.
What was ESL 75 A,B, & C?
ESL 75 was a 3-unit intermediate level grammar and editing course; ESL 75 A/B/ C are the same as 75, but they are online, and 1 unit each. 75 A, B, and C each cover different grammar topics.
ESL 75 is designed to help students needing extra grammar support at the intermediate level in the writing courses. It is an elective; it is not a requirement for advancement or graduation. It meets requirements for the Certificate of Academic Accomplishment in Advanced Academic English as a Second Language.

ESL 75 online FAQ
Is ESL 75 100% online?
Yes, for Fall 2022 ESL 75 is completely online. There are weekly deadlines that you meet by submitting all assignments online through Canvas.
Starting in Spring 2023, the ESL courses will include a mandatory Wednesday night class on Zoom, from 6:10 to 7:40. The Zoom Room opens at 6pm and we start promptly at 6:10.
Is ESL 75 is the right level for me?
Before taking this course, you need to take the credit ESL Placement test. When you see the results, you will know your level.
If your level is 182 or non-credit, you'll need to take those courses first; you can't take the grammar courses yet.
If your level is 184, this is probably the right course for you.
If your level is ESL 186 , you probably want to take the higher level editing class ESL 85 , which is also offered online, as 85A/B/C, taught by Nicki Trahan.
What do we learn in ESL 75?
In the ESL 75 sequence we will focus on academic writing, editing, and proofreading skills and strategies, with a number of individual and collaborative assignments to support your mastery. As a fully online class, we will practice writing clear, coherent paragraphs every week. There will also be vocabulary and grammar activities and quizzes to support your mastery of the English language and you will keep a Grammar Journal.
There is no textbook for this course. All materials will be accessed on-line. At the end of the 6-week course, there will be a final assessment to demonstrate mastery of everything you have learned.
Do I need a lot of computer skills?
You don't need to be a computer expert. We use the Canvas system for our class (see below for more information about Canvas), which isn't difficult to learn. But you need the ability to:
use e-mail
take photos with your phone or camera (or use a scanner)
use basic word processing skills (type/save/open documents)
watch videos online
Can I really learn English online?
Yes! I am an experienced online educator and I LOVE the online format! My students tell me this class has helped them take the time they need to improve the details of their English grammar and to build their confidence.
Isn't online learning difficult?
!t's different from a face-to-face class and requires you to mange your time efficiently and stay organized. But I am here to support you every step of the way. See the video below about successful online learning.
What if I don't want to take a writing course this semester?
It's best to take this course while taking a writing course; however, it's not necessary to take both at the same time. If you don't have much time in your schedule but you want grammar help with writing, you can just take 75 A/B/C if it's the right level for you.
OK, I want to take this class. How do I start?
First, are you already a City College student? If not, you need to apply for admission first. See the apply for admissions page. After you are accepted and ready, register in Web4 as soon as possible (the class may fill up quickly!).
ESL 75 A starts on Tuesday, January 19th and finishes Sunday Februay 28th. On that day, you can login to Canvas and start the course. There are many online Canvas guides (see below) to show you how Canvas works.
What happens after ESL 75A?
If you want more practice, you can choose to take 75B and/or C, which cover different grammar topics.
The good news! It is not necessary to take ESL 75A before B or C. That means you may choose any of the 3 start dates during the semester.
