Gas Laws: Gas Law PhET
I selected the PhET Gas Properties simulation as a resource for families to try and understand how pressure, volume and temperature are related. In class we have been learning about the individual gas laws as well as being able to apply the Combined Gas Law to solve problems.
The simulation at PhET allowed my students to be able to see in an interactive way the relationships between the variables we have been learning about, rather than just being able to write them down in the form of equations and solve problems.
The purpose of this simulation is to model and explore particle motion, collision frequency and changes in volume in real time. This can be used as a vehicle for teaching direct and inverse relationships. A parent can work with a student to adjust the temperature or volume of the container and watch the pressure change.
This resource supports families by:
- Reinforcing conceptual understanding of gas behavior
- Connecting classroom equations to real-world examples (tires, aerosol cans, balloons)
- Providing a visual model of particle motion
- Allowing students to re-practice investigations outside of class
- Encouraging inquiry-based discussion at home
Links the work of the home with the work of the school, maintaining an academic focus whilst promoting higher order learning.
