Gap Year Description: A semester or year of experiential learning, typically taken after high school and prior to career or post-secondary education, in order to deepen one's practical, professional, and personal awareness.
No two gap years are alike: Intentionality, deliberately expanding one's comfort zones, having a cross-cultural experience, and reflecting on your experiences are critical components to a quality gap year
Volunteer Description: Taking time to complete time volunteering, possibly with a certain program or exchange. This is to reflect, gain experience, and take time to find your passion and place in life.
Requirements: There are no specific requirements for taking a gap year or volunteering. If you go through a program there maybe some requirements such as an application, physical (doctors check up), or certain experiences.
If the program is aboard, in another country, additional doctors appointments with vaccinations maybe required. Passport or REAL ID- driver's license.
Helpful Hints:
Do your research! Finding a program or job to assist in your Gap Year is key. The goal is to learn, grow, reflect, and possibly save money for future plans. It is important that you have a plan to accomplish the goals of gap year.
Time! Taking time to learn more about your goals and interests in life is valuable, however taking too much time to get back into the swing of schooling can be challenging as well. Make a plan and stick to it. If you plan to work/volunteer for 1 or 2 years then apply to your schooling option, hold yourself accountable to do just that.
Chat with Community Partners! Many times local religious establishments or community partners, such as Goodman Center, know of upcoming volunteer experiences. Working with others who have experience in this route is very helpful!
