General Information
The program of work is challenging just as working in healthcare. We plan to develop students academically, technically, and professionally. Some of our current and past students have told us that this is the first time they have had to learn to study.
Please understand that class discussions, videos, and field trips may address sensitive topics such as death and dying, human reproduction, STD’s and patient care skills such as bathing and dressing as they relate to health care.
We expect students to behave in a professional manner as we operate as a simulated workplace. This means that we relate classroom environment to a workplace environment. Students are expected to be on time, attentive in class, and work well with everyone.
Once students have completed their first and second year in the program (this is a requirement that must be done their sophomore and junior year), they can interview for Internships for their senior year.
It is very competitive and there are limited spots. Students will participate in a professional panel interview, and faculty will look at each student's GPA, discipline, attendance, and interview scores.
You are working under your Health Science teachers professional licensure when you are an internship student, and that is taken very seriously.
Students in Health Science Internship will recieve approximately 100 hands-on clinical hours at Huntsville and Madison Hospital, as well as multiple local on-campus college visits/tours.
Each course is a 9 week period, so students will receive 4 credits per year while at MCCTC.
During your first year at tech you will also receive your health credit with Foundations of Health Science as well as a science credit with Human Body Structures and Functions.
You can take Driver's Ed while at MCCTC. Speak with Mrs. Bucy (rbucy@madison.k12.al.us) for more information.
The medical program at MCCTC is 3 years long in total. Ideally students start with us as a sophomore, and continue with us through graduation.
Students must have 2 blocks available to come to MCCTC, so we will have our students for 2 blocks for the entire school year. If you are in an activity that requires a block (sports, band, etc.) you can still attend tech, you will just need to enroll in a Zero Block online course to meet the requirements of 2 core classes each semester.
Students must complete 1st year and 2nd year courses to be eligible for Health Science Internship their senior year. If a student begins the program at MCCTC as a junior, they will not be eligible for the internship program their senior year. It is imperative that students take the entirety of the courses offered prior to internship to best prepare themselves.
They will be able to take the 1st year courses as a junior and return their senior year as a 2nd year if they wish to continue in the program.
