HOSA State Leadership Conference (SLC) FAQ’s
Where and when is HOSA SLC?
HOSA SLC will be __________ in Montgomery, AL.
How do I get there?
Students will take a charter bus leaving from MCCTC on the morning of Wednesday Feb 26th. We will stop on the way down in Birmingham for lunch. A specific leaving time will be announced closer to time. Students will need to either drive or get dropped off the morning of leaving by 8:30 am - do not go to your home school and ride the tech bus. Students should be returning around 8:00 pm Friday night (March 1st). Students competing are required to ride to and from Montgomery on the charter bus with the group.
How much does the trip cost?
Trip costs will vary year to year, especially with inflation. We do a fundraiser each fall that helps to deduct from the student’s total cost. This year the trip is estimated to be $400 per student. This fee includes:
Hotel room for 2 nights
$40 HOSA registration fee
Charter bus
Fees are subject to change depending on how many students attend. If students participated in the donation fundraiser, what they raised will go towards their trip.
Where will I be staying once I get there?
Students and teachers will stay at the Springhill Suites in downtown Montgomery (152 Coosa Street, Montgomery AL). Teachers reserve rooms at the beginning of the school year, since it is a statewide event it usually books up pretty fast!
Will I be sharing a room with other students?
Yes - to help keep costs affordable for students wanting to attend, as well as limited availability of hotel rooms, students do share rooms. Depending on what the hotel has available, 3-4 students could be placed in one of the following types of rooms:
2 double beds with sofa pull out bed
2 queen beds
1 king bed with sofa pullout bed
This means that students may have to bedshare depending on how many rooms are available and how many students attend. Of course males and females will be separated.
What if I don’t feel comfortable bed sharing or sharing a hotel room?
We will make every effort to accommodate for a student that does not feel comfortable bed sharing, however if a student would like their own separate hotel room accommodations will need to be made by the student and parent of the student. We reserve our hotel room numbers for MCCTC HOSA students based on the idea that students will share rooms.
Do I get to choose my roommate(s)?
No - teachers will place students in assigned rooms. Teachers will place at least one senior student in each room, and add students accordingly. Students at MCCTC are given multiple opportunities each week to mix and mingle with students outside of their classes, so students should at least be familiar with everyone even if they are in different classes.
If there are any types of accommodations (mainly medical) that will be anticipated for a student, those need to be expressed prior to the student qualifying for SLC. Please let the teachers know ASAP. Once accommodations and room assignments are made they are final.
What do I need to bring?
The staples (clothes, hygiene products, any medications you need, etc) as well as special items you will need for HOSA SLC:
HOSA dress code approved clothes for competition and business sessions (you can find the dress code for your competition on your guidelines, dress for business sessions is business casual) *Each student is required to have a navy or black blazer/suit jacket, matching pants or skirt, and white undershirt, males need a maroon tie*
An ID (drivers license, student ID, etc)
Wooden pencils (no mechanical)
Snacks for the bus ride and hotel room (if you would like)
Money for 6 meals
What if I take medications?
You will receive a medication form that needs to be filled out, signed, and returned to the school nurse. Depending on what the medication is, you will either be able to self-carry (meaning you keep it and are responsible for taking it) or a medication assistant (one of your teachers) will keep it and dispense it to you at the correct time.
Are there any other forms that need to be filled out?
Yes - the permission slip needs to be signed and filled out.
What do I need to prepare for at my home school since I will be missing 3 days of school?
Your absences will be excused since they are school related activities. Please touch base with your teachers prior to leaving and obtain any missing assignments you will need to complete.
What does a typical day look like at HOSA SLC?
Once we get to Montgomery and are situated in our hotel, each room will have a “room leader” - usually a senior student - that will have the room key. You are to not go anywhere outside of the hotel in less than a group of 3.
