Benjamin Franklin - a gifted scientist, inventor, and statesman who proved that lightning was a form of electricity and invented bifocal glasses, lightning rods, and the Franklin stove.
In 1619, John Smith, Governor of the Jamestown Colony, addressed the delegates of the Virginia House of Burgesses, the first legislative assembly (representative government) in the American colonies.
Trans-Atlantic Triangular Trade – the pattern of colonial commerce in which enslaved people, rum, sugar, tobacco, cotton, and molasses were bought and traded between the African gold coast, New England, and the West Indies.
EXPLORATION - traveling to new territories for the purpose of discovery
CHARTER - a document issued by a government that gives rights to a person or group
MIGRATION - movement from one region to another
INDENTURED SERVANTS - a person who signs an agreement and is bound by indentures to work for another for a specified time
MONARCHY - a government where the ruler inherits the leadership role
REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNMENT - political system where policies are created by representatives selected by the people
MARKET - the area of economic activity in which buyers and sellers come together and the forces of supply and demand affect prices
COLONY - a settlement ruled by a distant country
MERCANTILISM - economic policy where colonies serve as a source of raw materials to increase the wealth and maintain a favorable balance of trade for the "mother" country
CASH CROP - a crop that is sold for money
AGRICULTURE - the science, industry, or occupation of raising crops (farming) or livestock (ranching) to study or make a profit
RAW MATERIAL - the basic material that can be used to make or create something
FREE ENTERPRISE SYSTEM - economic system characterized by freedom for consumers and producers to buy or sell their choice of products for the price they decide
INDUSTRY - economic activity that involves the making of a particular product; type of business

Columbus Day honors the day Christopher Columbus discovered America. The official holiday falls on October 12. As with all Federal holidays, when a holiday falls on a Sunday - it is usually observed on Monday. When it falls on a Saturday - the holiday is usually observed on a Friday.
