Lewis & Clark Expedition
ABOVE: Original writing of Francis Scott Key's poem, "Defence of Fort McHenry" which he paired with the tune, "To Anacreon in Heaven," to make the song we now sing as "The Star-Spangled Banner." Key wrote the song that became our official national anthem during the the War of 1812, a war fought between the young nation of the United States and the joint forces of the British with the Native Americans who were unhappy about unkept treaties and the British who wanted to regain control of the land and waterways in America.
NATIONALISM - believing your own nation is superior to others and that belief resulting in great loyalty to the country
IMPRESSMENT - forcing someone into military or government service
BLOCKADE - to stop people or supplies from entering or leaving (a port or country) especially during a war
INDUSTRY - type of business or group of businesses that provide a particular product or service; the process of making products using machinery or factories
SUPPLY - the amount of something that is available to be used
DEMAND - the ability and need or desire to buy goods and services
EXPEDITION - a journey or trip with specific purpose, usually taken to explore a distant place or to research a region
PATRIOTISM - strong feelings of pride in one’s country
NATIONAL IDENTITY - the shared character of a country as a whole, encompassing its beliefs, culture, traditions, language, and politics
INTERCHANGEABLE PARTS - standard parts made so close to the same that they can replace one another during the manufacturing or repair of a product
MECHANIZATION - to change a process or an activity so that it is done with machines instead of by people or animals
STEEL PLOW - a machine with a strong blade designed to move earth, snow, or other material
CANAL - a long narrow place that is filled with water and was created by people so that boats could pass through it or to supply fields or crops with water
ERA - a period of time that is associated with a particular quality, event, or person
