OPTION: Citizenship
GCSE - Edexcel
GCSE - Edexcel
By examining the inner workings of the UK government, students will gain a deeper knowledge of democracy, government and law. All aspects of democracy and government are explored, beginning with the structure of government down to the action and power of a vote. The concept of justice is looked at not only through formation of laws but how it is carried out in the court system; fairness, equality, and human rights are probed. Although primarily focused on the UK, contrast is introduced on a global scale. Additional themes of study introduce new knowledge around identity, culture, and communication.
Within all topics of study students will increasingly develop the skills needed to create sustained and reasoned arguments, present their own viewpoints and those of others, and plan practical citizenship action that delivers benefits for society with measurable results. To enable this action students will use tools of engagement such as student/public survey, government petition, letters to MPs/PM, Instagram Live, school assembly, and live polls.
Throughout the course students will also gain the ability to recognise bias, critically evaluate argument, weigh evidence, and look for alternative interpretations and sources of evidence.
