This region is located in Canada and the state of Alaska. It is very icy and snowy. The climate is very hard to live in. Very little plants or trees grow in this area. The Native Americans that live in this area are called the Inuit. The caribou roam this region. The Inuit depend on the caribou for food, shelter and clothing.
Shelter
Native Americans living in this region lived in two types of shelters. During the winter months, they live in igloos made of snow and blocks of ice. During the summer months, they live in tepees or tents made from animal hide and wood. The Inuit were people who did not stay in once place very long. Their tents and igloos were temporary and could be taken down or put up frequently.
Clothing
Native Americans living in this region used animal hides and fur to make their clothing. Men and women wore the same type clothes. The caribou's skins were what most of their clothes were made of. Some clothing came from the fur or skin of polar bears, bird skin, and seals. The Inuit wore several layers of clothing.
Food
Native Americans living in this region ate many marine animals. Marine animals are ones which live in or near water. These animals included seals, fish, and whales. Inuits also ate polar bears, elks and caribou.
