Here at Loomis Union School District, we are very fortunate to be able to provide band instruction to all 6th grade students who choose to continue their elementary band experience. In 6th grade band, our young musicians will continue their instrumental music journey to further develop their skills as both an individual musician and as part of the band. 6th grade band will begin with a thorough review of note and rhythm reading, as well as instrumental exercises designed to revive their fluency, dexterity, and endurance on their chosen instrument. No experience is necessary for this class, but previous experience will be very beneficial to the musician. All skills, including music reading, how to assemble and care for the instrument, how to play their chosen instrument, and general music theory, will be taught in class over the course of the year.

6th grade Band will meet each week for two 45 minute classes for the entire year. Each student will focus on a single instrument, and may choose from Flute, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, or Baritone, or Percussion. Families are expected to rent or purchase an instrument, book (specifics listed under "required supplies"), and instrument-specific supplies. District instruments are available for families who are unable to provide an instrument, but we have a very limited number of available instruments and we kindly ask only families who are unable to provide an instrument to request district instruments. Please note that instruments will be distributed as available, and district instrument requests may have to compromise with an available instrument if the first choice is not available. Students are expected to arrive at class each day with their instrument, book/music, and instrument-specific supplies. FULL PARTICIPATION, BOTH INDIVIDUALLY AND AS A PART OF THE TEAM, ARE EXPECTED EACH DAY AND ARE A PART OF YOUR CHILD'S GRADE.

6th Grade band students will be graded with traditional letter grading, and grades will be updated regularly over the course of the semester. Points are earned for each class session for being prepared and participation, and grading will only be applied to work and participation during class time. No homework will be assigned nor is home practice required. However, students will be encouraged to practice at home and students who excel may be provided supplemental music and exercises to encourage their development. Students are not graded on their playing ability, only on their effort, personal responsibility, Growth, Teamwork and participation.
