Lockhart ISD Pre-Kindergarten Curriculum

Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines

Lockhart ISD pre-kindergarten teachers use the state's Pre-K Guidelines to plan and teach. LISD believes classrooms should be environments where students learn by exploring. According to the Texas Education Agency, "The Texas Pre-Kindergarten Guidelines are based on current knowledge of theory and scientific research about how children develop and learn; they reflect the growing consensus among early childhood professional organizations that a greater emphasis be placed on young children’s conceptual learning, acquisition of basic skills, and participation in meaningful, relevant learning experiences."

RSK Assessment

The assessment is ongoing and allows teacher to gather data on their students over a period of time. The quarterly parent report card communicates to parents if their student is at a level of Focus (Level 1), Get Ready (Level 2), Set (Level 3) or Go (Level 4). It is a developmentally appropriate tool specific to assessing students in PreKinder.

RSK also provides for teachers examples and instructional tools to support rubric scoring and data gathering.

Professional Development

Pre-kindergarten teachers have had the opportunity to attend the CIRCLE Preschool Foundations training conducted by the Children’s Learning Institute at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. This training provides a comprehensive look at pre-kindergarten instruction to support kindergarten readiness. The key areas of CIRCLE training include:

Thematic Scope and Sequence

LISD provides teachers with a scope and sequence for Reading, Math, Science and Social Studies. This scope and sequence was created by prekindergarten teachers in our district and offers teachers various resources and lesson ideas for teaching the Prekindergarten Guidelines.

Writing

“Inside every child is a writer.” --Matt Glover

In 2019, LISD implemented the Matt Glover model for teaching writing in prekindergarten and kindergarten classrooms. This method encourages all students to see themselves as writers by making books, listening to writing-focused read alouds, and sharing their own writing with their teacher and classmates.

Classroom Environment

Lockhart ISD utilizes the Classroom Environment Checklist to focus on the presence and quality level of instructional planning tools, meaningful literacy and print centers and materials (e.g. letter wall, availability of books), and the overall design and management of the classroom and individual centers.
