Each year educators are challenged to teach state standards to a level of mastery for all our students. This is a difficult task in a ‘normal year’ as the pacing seems quick and our students are not at the same starting point.
We realize that the starting point for most students was affected by our quick turn around into distance learning last spring. COVID has brought many challenges mentally, emotionally, and physically for all. With this in mind and in an effort to ensure mastery for our students, we have decided to designate ‘Foundational TEKS’ across the district in math and reading Kinder-EOC grades. The district ICs and Lever Leaders collaborated to discuss what standards were key to next year’s success. They looked vertically and had conversations about what students needed to master this year to ensure a secure foundation for next year. This collaborative effort produced the ‘Foundational TEKS’.
Dr. Camarillo's Message - Dec. 11, 2020
What does this mean for you as a teacher? You know your students and what they are mastering and struggling with. Therefore we have prepared documents that name the Foundational TEKS. These documents determine what will need to be focused on for mastery at each grade level. This will allow your team to look at data and decide if there are previously taught Foundational TEKS that need more time for mastery and allow you time to spiral as you plan. This cannot be effectively done with the current load of our TEKS. Therefore, data of the Foundational TEKS will drive decision making on instruction. The expectation is that these Foundational TEKS will be mastered by the end of this school year. This mastery will serve as a launching point for teachers next year. All Checkpoints will be edited to ensure the data provides information of mastery of Foundational TEKS.
How will Foundational TEKS affect the TEKS resource calendar?
The TEKS resource calendar will remain the same. Teachers will use the Foundational TEKS in each unit to drive unit planning. This will allow teachers the flexibility of spending additional time to spiral previously taught Foundational standards that students have not mastered.
How does this affect checkpoints?
Checkpoints will be modified to only assess Foundational TEKS.
How does this affect what we have already planned?
Finish the unit of study you are currently on. For upcoming units, review what was planned and adjust to secure enough time within the unit for mastery of the Foundational TEKS.
Does this impact social studies and science?
5th Grade Science Scope & Sequence already reflects a scaffolded version of the standards therefore Foundational TEKS are already in the TEKS RS Calendar for 5th grade Science. At this time the district will not provide foundational standards for Science and Social Studies for any other grade. We encourage integration with LA and Math as much as possible.
Are we still teaching the non foundational TEKS?
Teams will determine the time spent on the TEKS that haven’t been designated as Foundational TEKS. The goal is to ensure time for mastery on the Foundational TEKS. Teams will disaggregate data to determine whether more time is needed on Foundational TEKS or time can be designated to other grade level standards.
Do we still follow the Year-at-a-Glance in TEKS Resource?
Yes, follow the YAG and concentrate on the Foundational TEKS that are in that unit.
