Leyte Normal University, in collaboration with the Local Government Unit of the Municipality of Villaba, conducts an ocular inspection for the research project titled "Sustainable Tourism Assessment of Buga-Buga Hills."
The project, "Sustainable Tourism Assessment of Buga-Buga Hills in Villaba Leyte Philippines," is a twelve-month study set to begin in June 2024. It is a multifaceted research initiative poised to balance ecological preservation with economic benefits. The study will conduct a rapid assessment of biodiversity, community perceptions, and tourism infrastructure to formulate actionable strategies for sustainable tourism and conservation in Villaba Leyte particularly in Buga-buga Hills. Aligning with SDGs 11, 13, 15, 16, and 17, the study aims to improve quality of life and ensure long-term viability of natural and cultural resources in Villaba. It will provide crucial data for policy development, capitalizing on Villaba's natural landscapes, rich biodiversity, and historical significance, thereby fostering community empowerment and environmental conservation. The research will involve field surveys, ethnobiological assessments, and community and market feasibility studies, integrating quantitative and qualitative methods to capture the complexity of sustainable tourism. The initiative is endorsed by the congressional office of the Third District of Leyte, reflecting a strategic move towards sustainable development and economic recovery.

DOST VIII Launches Grassroots Innovation Imperatives and Nuances: CEST Interventions Qualification Model with Leyte Normal University
On a rainy Friday morning, November 18, 2022, the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. VIII, launched the 1st DOST Grassroots Innovation for Inclusive Development (GRIND) Program in Eastern Visayas and Memorandum of Agreement Signing with Leyte Normal University (LNU) and Eastern Visayas Consortium for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (EVCIEERD), entitled: Grassroots Innovations Imperatives and Nuances: Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST) Interventions and Qualification Model. As the lead proponent of the program, the Leyte Normal University headed by its President, Dr. Evelyn B. Aguirre, warmly welcomed DOST VIII Regional Director, Engr. Ernesto M. Granada, and EVCIEERD Coordinator, Dr. Ramil T. Uy during the activity. The program will reveal how grassroots innovation of the marginalized sectors of the Province of Leyte was developed, underscoring turn-around narratives of success with an end-view of mitigating their challenges through CEST Interventions and thereby deepening the conceptualization and assuring the institutionalization of the DOST GRIND program. The study will culminate with a baselining component, providing empirical bases for CEST interventions. In his message, Engr. Granada cited, “DOST driven by its vision of being a provider of world-class scientific, technological, and innovative solutions that will lead to higher productivity and better quality of life, continues to forge strong partnerships and collaboration with our stakeholders.” Furthermore, he added that the launching of the DOST GRIND is very timely since he will be participating in the DOST GRIND International Benchmarking Activities in India on November 27-December 2, 2022, and the insights and outputs of which will be very useful in the implementation of the program in Eastern Visayas.

EMPOWERING INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY: LEVERAGING ACQUASILVICULTURE AMONG ARTISANAL FISHERFOLKS OF BRGY. 83-A BURAYAN, TACLOBAN CITY
DOST VIII seals commitment to LNU Aquasilviculture Project via MOA signing and turn-over of funds.
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) thru DOST-VIII Regional Director Ernesto M. Granada inked a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Leyte Normal University President Evelyn B. Aguirre for the Aquasilviculture Project of Brgy. 83-A Burayan, Tacloban City.
The ceremonial turn-over of funds took place on March 14, 2022 at Leyte Normal University – HRDC Gymnasium and followed by the MOA signing at the LNU Ballroom Hall.
The project entitled “Empowering an Indigenous Community: Leveraging Aquasilviculture among Artisanal Fisherfolks of Brgy. 83-A Burayan, Tacloban City” which the department funded for P300,400.00 centers on Community Empowerment Thru Science and Technology (CEST) intervention to improve the livelihood of artisanal fisherfolks of Brgy. 83-A Burayan, Tacloban City as the beneficiaries, by providing them with knowledge in aquasilviculture methodologies, aquasilviculture technology, and establish community-based coastal resources management.
During the onslaught of ST Yolanda in 2013, Burayan was highly impacted with significant damages in the mangrove and beach forest greenbelts. Hence, there is a need to introduce aquasilviculture methodologies through a community extension project with the barangay.
Dir. Granada was joined by Mr. Jason Taña and Ms. Carmee Sarvida, CEST Personnel. The event was also attended by Dr. Las Johansen Caluza, VP for Research and Extension, Mr. Alexander Dela Cruz, Brgy. 83-A Burayan Representative, and LNU coordinators and officials.

Establishing Baseline Agriculture Performance and Rural Development Indicators in Leyte and Southern Leyte
This research study aimed to better understand the impact of the Department of Agriculture's programs and projects on the conditions of the country's farmers and fishers, especially during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. Its implementation is included in the interventions under the "Bayanihan to Recover as One Act" also known as Bayanihan 2. This aimed to greatly assist in enhancing the responsiveness of our agriculture development plans and programs to better guide the Department of Agriculture in its efforts to:
improve and enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the DA's various policies and actions towards alleviating the conditions of farmers, fishermen, and other participants in the agricultural sector.
enhance the quality and timeliness of delivery of the DA's services to its target beneficiaries; and
strengthen the relevance of the Department's programs, actions, and strategies to the needs of the producers, consumers, economy, and society at large.
