REQUIRED: CHALLENGE COURSES
Math 8 Challenge Math (ALG 1,GEOM)
MTH 121/122 Algebra 1 1-2
Grade: 8
Length: 1 year
Credits: .5 per semester
Prerequisite: Students enrolling in this class should receive a recommendation from their current math teacher.
In order to enroll in Algebra or a higher math course you need to have a B or better in your current challenge math class. It is also important to consider your current math teacher’s recommendation. This course makes the transition from arithmetic to algebra by developing the ability to use mathematical concepts, principles and processes. The number system (with literal and signed numbers), fundamental operations, linear equations, special products and factoring, fractions and fractional equations, and powers and roots constitute the core of the course. The primary objectives of the course are to increase the student’s ability to solve problems to familiarize them with mathematical symbolism in preparation for higher math. This is a high school credit bearing class that will automatically have the credit and corresponding grade placed on the student's high school transcript. Students have until the end of their 11th grade year to remove the credit bearing course from their transcript. That request must be made through the student's high school counselor.
MTH 231/232 Geometry 1-2
Grade: 8
Length: 1 year
Credits: .5 per semester
Prerequisite: Students enrolling in this class should receive a recommendation from their current math teacher.
In order to enroll in Geometry you need to have a B or better in your Algebra class. This fast paced class will cover geometric figures in the plane and in space. The study of points, lines, polygons, circles, planes and their various relationships form the basic core of the course. This is a high school credit bearing class that will automatically have the credit and corresponding grade placed on the student's high school transcript. Students have until the end of their 11th grade year to remove the credit bearing course from their transcript. That request must be made through the student's high school counselor.
MTH 800/801 Math 8 1-2
Grade: 8
Length: 1 year
Credits: No High School Credit
Prerequisite: None
8th grade math will focus on three critical areas: (1) formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations; (2) grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; (3) analyzing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.
SEV802/803 Resource Math 1-2
Grade: 8
Length: 1 year
Credits: No High School Credit
Prerequisite: Case Manager Permission
These courses use the problem solving approach to the study of number sense, measurement, algebraic sense, geometry, probability and statistics. Focus will be on real world applications. Student placement will be determined by academic skill level using current assessment data and IEP team recommendations.
