Students will work to meet or exceed grade 8 standards in reading, writing, speaking and listening,and language. Students will practice close reading and discussion skills as they analyze a variety of multi-media texts, including short stories, novels, poetry, informational text and audio/visual texts. Students will read independent books throughout the year. They will write narrative, explanatory and argument texts.

Prerequisite: Have a B grade or better in your current Language Arts class
Advanced students work toward grade 9 standards in reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language. Students practice close reading and discussion skills as they analyze a variety of multimedia texts, including short stories, novels, poetry, informational reads and audio/visual texts. Students read independent books each semester, and learn how to write narrative, argument,and explanatory papers that meet or exceed grade 9 standards. You may self-select into the challenge Language Arts course if you have a B grade or better in your current Language Arts class. If you have a C you MUST have teacher approval. When thinking about this option please consider your reading and writing skills which should at least meet or exceed your current grade level expectations. Please have your current Language Arts teacher initial the front of your registration form to show they support your decision to enroll in Challenge Language Arts. This is a high school credit bearing class that will automatically have the credit and corresponding grade placed on the student's high school transcript. Students have until the end of their 11th grade year to remove the credit bearing course from their transcript. That request must be made through the student's high school counselor.
SEV 800/801 Resource English 1-2

Prerequisite: Case Manager Permission
The course objectives promote student mastery of the writing process, writing mechanics, essential library skills, and speech. The five essential components of reading (comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, phonics, and phonemic awareness) are studied through world literature, poetry, drama, fiction, and nonfiction. Student placement will be determined by academic skill level using current assessment data and IEP team recommendations.
