'Family Member Description' with Miss Tamblyn
Describing words - colour, size, texture, shape, number
Learning Intention: We are learning to use describing words to write a description.
Success Criteria:
I can identify describing words for colour, size, texture, shape and number.
I can write a description of a family member using describing words for colour, size, texture, shape and number.
You will need:
A family member (or photograph)
Scrapbook or a piece of paper
Writing pencil (grey lead is best!)
Coloured pencils/crayons
At school, we have been learning to write simple descriptions. Descriptive writing helps make our writing more interesting.
When writing a description, we need to use lots of describing words, or adjectives, to help us explain what something looks, sounds or feels like.
Today you will be writing a description about a member of your family! You will need to think of lots of different describing words to describe what your family member looks like. There is a list of describing words (left) to help you. Then, watch the video to follow along with Miss Tamblyn and write your description.
*Remember, you are writing a description about your own family member so you will need to change the red words in the video to suit your own description.
Activity Steps:
Think carefully about what your family member looks like. Think about their hair, eyes, skin and face. Then think about which colour, size, texture, shape and number words describe those attributes. You may like to choose one from the list.
Follow along with the video to write 3-5 sentences describing your family member using the sentence structure 'My (family member) has (describing word)(attribute)'. Have a go at sounding out any new or unfamiliar words. Your goal is to use one of each category of describing words.
Draw a picture of your family member to match your writing.
There is an example (left) to help you.
Have fun! We can’t wait to read about your loved ones :)
Watch the video about persuasive writing provided and then look at the structure of an exposition.

Next, write a persuasive text to convince your teacher that you should teach the class OR persuade people that Mr. Shaw is the best principal.
Make sure to read over your writing to check for mistakes.
