National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y)

"NSLI-Y offers immersive programs abroad with a focus on language learning for American teens for a summer or an academic year. Participants attend language classes, live with host families for all or part of the program, engage with the host community, and participate in a variety of cultural activities. "

FREE PROGRAM

Countries:

• Summer: Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Korean, and Russian

• Academic year: Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), and Russian

Eligibility: 

• Be a U.S. citizen 

• Agree to Participant Terms & Conditions 

• Have a GPA of 2.5 or higher 

• Be 15-18 years of age at the start of the program 

• For 2027 summer programs: birthdate between July 3, 2008 – June 10, 2012

• For 2027-28 academic year programs: birthdate between August 30, 2008 – June 30, 2012

• Be enrolled in grades 9-12 (high school or home school equivalent) at the time of application 

• Applicants for summer programs must be U.S. citizens residing in the United States at the time of application. 

• Be in the Beginner-Advanced Low target language proficiency range on the ACTFL Proficiency Scale. 

Applicants may be required to take a language test during the selection process.

Future Leaders Exchange Global Abroad (FLEX Global Abroad)

"Future Leaders Exchange Global Abroad (FLEX Global Abroad) is a U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs cultural exchange program that provides young Americans a unique opportunity for personal and professional growth and fosters the next generation of leaders. Talented high school students from across the U.S. are chosen through a merit-based process to live with a host family and attend high school for one academic year in select countries. As citizen diplomats, students showcase American excellence; learn about innovation, business, and technology in their host communities; develop their entrepreneurial, language, and leadership skills; and strengthen ties between U.S. and their host countries."

Application: FLEX (Same site as NSLI-Y - you can only pick ONE program)

Deadline: November 30 (4 PM ET).

FLEX Global Abroad is an Academic Year (10 month) program. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Morocco, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania and Thailand. 

Eligibility: 

• Be a U.S. citizen

• Be enrolled in grades 9-12 (high school, including home school).

• Applicants of all grade-point averages and academic performance are encouraged to apply

• Have birthdates within the following ranges:

  • FLEX Global Abroad: December 30, 2008 - June 30, 2012

• • NSLI-Y (Summer): July 3, 2008 - June 10, 2012

  • NSLI-Y (Academic Year): August 30, 2008 - June 30, 2012

Caddie Academy

"The mission of the WGA Caddie Academy is to provide summer caddie opportunities to at-promise high school students who excel in the classroom and in their communities. We seek to use caddying, the game of golf and the Evans Scholarship to prepare young men and women for a lifetime of success."

Eligibility:

• Great academic standing (3.6GPA)

• Display financial need

• First-gen college student is preferred
