A Note from your Program Manager, Leader Miriam (She/Her/Ella):
Hi Leaders,
It is with honor and gratitude to be working alongside you this year. As a Cohort 3 member myself, I know and see the importance this transitional year holds.
I am a proud first-generation Mexican woman raised in East Las Vegas with a deep love for social justice and literature. Growing up, my parents demonstrated to me and my siblings the value of hard work and dedication. Though they did not have the opportunity to finish elementary school, they always made sure we all knew the privilege of what it meant to go to school. As I navigated my way through school, I realized there is so much more than just getting good grades, it's also the will to persevere through challenges a first-gen student faces while still uplifting your family and community.
During high school, I joined LIT because of the movement. Social justice was something I knew wasnt taught in school, but with Ms. Mosca's direction, I was able to exercise my anger into change and advocating for my people. I graduated from Las Vegas High school in 2018 and continued my education at Nevada State University, Majoring in Psychology. With all of my lived experience in mind and my courage in hands, I'm determined to continue my journey to grad school through creative writing, a poetess in the making.
As we navigate this year together, I hope my support reaches you beyond LIT. Having seen Cohort 9 to and through the program, I know that this community is a strong one. If you ever need 1:1 time, please reach out to me and remember, we do this work together.

Spring Break: There will be no session for the next to weeks! All communication will still be active so please make sure your Slack notifications on. See you Wednesday, April 1st!
Project Submission: There will be no session next week and I will be out of office during the time of your project submission on March 20th, 2026. It is up to your team leader and team to make sure your project is turned in. Submit through THIS LINK and make sure you fill out all info. When you are done

In-State College Bootcamp: In-State College Bootcamp is Mar. 16th - 18th Report to the office at 10AM each day. You can be here earlier if it’s easier for your parents, please send me a Slack message if that is the case. Remember: LIT Requirements are YOUR responsibility - the contract you sign is what we will hold you accountable for

Summer Programs: All 9-11th graders MUST complete a Summer Leadership Program that is

Either with LIT or another program
Failure to complete one means strike AND you do not come back for the next semester

Strike system: If you fail to turn in your grades, sign up/attend events, attend sessions, you will receive a strike. after 3, you will be removed from the program and will not be able to come back for the rest of the academic school year. If there is something wrong that you cannot turn in your grades or attend events you have to Advocate for yourself as you chose to be here.

Attendance: Communication and accountability is an expectation as part of your participation inLIT. Add all program dates and times to your calendar (located via LIT Member Site). If you will missa session or an event, contact your Program Manager at least 3 days prior and arrange a make-upsession or event. LIT is aware of emergencies, illnesses, or pressing personal business that cannot bescheduled outside session times. If you are unable to report to session, or if you know you will arrivelate, please contact your Program Manager immediately. If you know in advance that you will need tobe absent, please communicate with your Program Manager. If you are unable to call in because of anillness, emergency or for some other reason, be sure to have your parents communicate with theProgram Manager. Unless in the case of an emergency and you inform your Program Manager withless than 24 hours notice, you must arrange 2 make-up sessions or events within the month you missed.If you no call no show, you must arrange to attend study hall to complete make-up assignments withinthe week you missed and 2 no call, no shows within a semester is automatic removal from the program.
*This includes regular session attendance reflected on the LIT Member Site and #6 Monthly Eventsbelow. For example, if you have a no-call no-show to a session and no-call no-show to an event, thisequals automatic removal from the program, because that equals 2. We want you to succeed in LIT,but we also want to prepare you for the real-world. Know what you are committing to and ifsomething comes up, advocate for yourself.
3. Grades/Transcripts: You must check and turn in your grades bi-weekly via LIT Member Site. Allgrade turn-in surveys are linked on your cohort's announcements page. You must also submit your unofficial HS transcript to your Program Manager during the first week of session. Our theory on grades is that it's up to you to advocate for yourself and improve. We help create a system where you are accountable to both looking at them, turning them in and then doing something about it. If you are struggling and need support from a tutor* or access to instructional supplies, let your Program Manager know and attend study hall. It's your job to advocate to your teachers so they know who you are, that you are trying and use all strategies from staying after school/before school, getting extra work, making up assignments, etc to fix your mistakes. Students with Ds or Fs in core courses are REQUIRED to take summer school and get the fee waiver from their school. LIT will pay for summer school only if a student's fee waiver has been denied from the school - we will need proof of the denied waiver. We all review transcripts at parent meetings so your parents know your progress and lying on grade turn-in/ not submitting transcripts only hurts yourself since this is an optional program. If you choose to lie at an optional program, our group is not for you.
*At LIT, we don’t have official tutors, so it’s up to you to advocate for yourself.
