Science teachers use critical thinking and the scientific method with lab exercises in their own classrooms, so what is different with an iWonder project? In most labs the same end result is expected and teachers give them the steps. With the iWonder challenge this will not necessarily be the case. Students should be challenged to "show what they know" in a variety of ways. Collaboration is a valued part of the process. Project results will be varied. Search for innovative methods for teaching science. Allow students to have real world experiences.
The NGSS Guide - A high-quality science education means that students will develop an in-depth understanding of content and develop key skills—communication, collaboration, inquiry, problem solving, and flexibility—that will serve them throughout their educational and professional lives. K-12 Science Education Should Reflect the Interconnected Nature of Science as it is Practiced and Experienced in the Real World. “The framework is designed to help realize a vision for education in the sciences and engineering in which students, over multiple years of school, actively engage in scientific and engineering practices and apply crosscutting concepts to deepen their understanding of the core ideas in these fields.”
The NGSS Focus on Deeper Understanding of Content as well as Application of Content. The Framework identified a smaller set of Disciplinary Core Ideas that students should know by the time they graduate from high school, and the NGSS are written to focus on the same.
Performance Task - A performance task is any learning activity or assessment that asks students to perform to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and proficiency. Performance tasks yield a tangible product and/or performance that serve as evidence of learning.

Frame a scenario for a challenge based on the real world example. Finding a community partner for the challenge raises the authenticity. Challenges should be open ended or have the possibility of more than one right answer.
