Process over product – The final goal or product that a student creates is only one part of the process. The learning experiences that a student has while he or she undertakes the project are equally, if not more important. These are recorded (both formally and informally) in the student’s process journal.
Allow your child to learn from their struggles – As this type of project is unique to students’ experience in the MYP, they may have points when they are struggling with the project. This is a normal part of the process; however, if your child seems to be stuck or in need of additional follow-up in school, contact your child’s project supervisor or the PP coordinator.
Keep it in perspective – Although the project is intended to be challenging, it should not completely take over your child’s life (or yours!). A personal project should take approximately 25 hours for a student to complete.
Learners at the centre – Students develop as IB learners throughout the program and throughout the process. The learner profile attributes (pictured below) are representative of the elements of a child’s personality that we would hope to see develop over the course of the project.
How can I encourage my young scholar during this process?
Where projects have I completed and how can I relate?
What strategies does my child have that will help them succeed?
