1. Respond to the question: Do you think a teacher's self-esteem matters? Explain.  (8:35-8:45)

2. Read Aloud: Stand Tall, Molly Lou Mellon (8:45-8:55)

3. Watch the video on Self Esteem (8:55-9:00)

4. Read the first article.  (9:00-9:15) We will have a graded discussion next class based on our readings today. 

• Discuss the article as a group after you've read it. 

  • What's the difference in fostering self-esteem and building it? 

  • Do you agree with the suggestions the author makes to build and foster self-esteem? 

  • Where is the line between parent and teacher here? 

  • Do you think teachers should make students feel lovable and capable or focus on freedom and encouragement? Which do you think builds the most self-esteem? 

  • Why do we even talk about this? 

5. Move around the room to the white board. Write down specifically what teachers have done to build your self-esteem and what they may have done to harm it. Please remember to not name a teacher during this exercise.  (9:15-9:25)

6. .Read the article on "Phony vs. Earned Self-Esteem" (9:25-9:40)

• Discuss in your small groups

  • What is the difference between global and earned self-esteem? 

  • Why do teachers need to know about the difference between earned and global self-esteem? 

  • Can you think of a time when a teacher encouraged you through earned self-esteem? 

7. read "Struggle for Smarts"  (9:40-9:55)

8. Closing: We will prepare for a discussion of these articles next class. Come prepared to discuss using the discussion rubric. 

Homework: Be prepared for a graded discussion on self esteem next class. Your signed paperwork is also due next class.
