As someone who has always been an overthinker, I have found the stress of day to day life to be often overwhelming. After recently being diagnosed with anxiety and depression, I decided it was time to take a more active approach to exploring this aspect of myself. This led me to come to this investigation question; How does anxiety and depression impact my mental health, as well as my relationship with myself? In this investigation, I looked into the power of mixed media, as well as color versus grayscale, on representing the chaos and confusion that comes with having these disorders.
I struggle w/ maladaptive perfectionism:causing significant distress, anxiety,&constant impossible pursuit of flawless performance. This led me to investigate: "How can I use self-portraits to visually represent my own self-criticism, high standards, &persistent fear of failure?" I further explore this mindset which results in anxiety, burnout, &leaves no room for being human. I experimented w/mixed media, contrast, color symbolism, space&light to show confusion, isolation, &the emotional intensity associated w/ my experiences in the hopes of finding myself deserving grace
Initially, this investigation started as an exploration of how anxiety and depression feels to me. However, as I progressed further into my SI, I placed more emphasis on the materials I used in my art. With this focus in mind, I created pieces like SI # __ and SI # __, where I utilized mixed media to demonstrate my emotions. Finally, as I was nearing the end of my SI, I started implementing more positive concepts in my art to show there is always a chance for change. Through SI # __ and Revision # __, I displayed letting go of the impossible can help you enjoy the human experience much more.
Became positive revision/resolution series showing that there was a positive outcome, pathway to clarity/management of these expectations/standards you set for yourself which helps you enjoy ilfe, let go of the impossible, and exist as a human feeling so much pressure/burn out all the time.

I started by visually representing my daily anxiety & depression w/ drawing(2-12). As my work progressed, I experimented w/ processes & materials to communicate my emotional distress. I used mixed media to demonstrate feelings of disassociation & chaos(1,6-8,13-14). At the end of my SI, I found myself revising artistic concepts, incorporating positive themes & resolutions within compositions (14 &15):Representing that there’s always a chance for change/growth. I visually explore letting go of the impossible, embracing my strengths & allowing myself to be human.
