Volunteer Opportunities
Please visit your individual school to volunteer for one of these positions.
Note: All adults who work with children in the Big Backyard program must have a valid CORI . Please click here to fill out a CORI form. CORI checks are good for 3 years.

Walk Leader
(Can participate in 1, 2 or all 3 walks)Receive a walk guide and onsite hands-on training before walk
Report to school and gather student group
Lead students outside
Engage children with opening question or observation
Walk school grounds making observations and asking questions
Walk Shadow
(Can participate in 1, 2 or all 3 walks) A walk shadow assists the walk leader by helping to keep the children focused during a walk. No training is necessary.
Program Coordinator
(Supported by District BBY Coordinator and K-5 Science Coordinator)Insures walks take place throughout the year for each grade. Coordinators work in a team and are responsible for 1-3 grades.
Responsible for recruiting volunteers to lead walks with the help of teachers. Use signup application to request volunteers. Works with scheduler when available.
Insures volunteers are trained on walk materials before the walks during a pre-walk outdoor trainings.
Attends 1-2 meetings per year with fellow coordinators from other schools to learn of new initiatives and changes to curriculum in the program.
Schedule Walks & Recruit Volunteers
(Can be done from home)Works with program coordinator and teachers to schedule and help recruit volunteers.
