Each one of Lexington's elementary schools takes part in the Big Backyard program. The program has seasonal curriculum corresponding to the science units being taught in the classroom.

The program curriculum is consistent across the schools while each walk is tailored to an individual school’s “Big Backyard”. Walks are designated in conjunction with the classroom teacher and the science specialist.
