Our History

The Big Backyard uses nature walks to provide hands-on learning in science and social studies, while incorporating writing, math, and art – as well as the student’s own natural curiosity skills. These walks were designed for the schools by naturalist, Bev Morrison (master environmentalist), Fran Ludwig (retired K-5 science coordinator and science teacher), and family and community volunteers.

The program was initially funded by a Lexington Education Foundation grant at Estabrook School in 1996 and later initiated at two other schools with LEF funds. The program is now an integral part of the K-5 science curriculum in all six of the elementary schools and is funded by the Lexington Public Schools.
