Something Extra: Every Good Friday for the past few years I've listened to contemporary composer James MacMillan's version of "Stabat Mater," a choral composition that contemplates the crucifixion from the perspective of his Mother. It's a strange and disorienting piece, but one whose beauty captures the horror of the crucifixion in a unique way. If you feel so inclined, give it a listen. It's being performed in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican.

European History I: I would like you to do a short writing assignment over the last lesson of the last unit. Answer this question in no more than two well-written paragraphs: How did trade and exploration affect Europe in a way that transitioned Europe out of the Middle Ages into the Modern world? Use your notes and describe how the Europe after Columbus was fundamentally different socially, economically, or commercially from the Europe of the Middle Ages.

European History I: I want you to write me a 1 paragraph reflection about what kind of church you attend (though not necessarily the specific church you attend). Talk with your parents and figure out what kind of Christian you are (your denomination/tradition), and then do a little research telling me the history of how that denomination came about.

Classical & Christian Studies 10: Finish all worksheets you have (cantos 7-8 and 9-10 worksheets). Study for a quiz over cantos 6-11.

Classical & Christian Studies 11: Two tasks. 1) Read letters 14-15 of Screwtape and annotate. 2) Take a 30 minute walk, by yourself, without music or noise, somewhere outdoors during the day, preferably in the woods. After your walk, write down when you went, where you went, and one thing you thought about as you walked.

Government: Read that pages in lesson 11 of your textbook about the Electoral College. Then, write a summary in which you describe the process by which someone becomes president. If desired, you can add hand-drawn illustrations to your summary to make it clearer (though you must still use words in a written summary).

European History I: Look up one piece of art from Michaelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello, Rafael, Carravaggio, or another Italian Renaissance artist (approved by me). Then, write me a 2-paragraph analysis of the piece of art. In a short first paragraph, tell me the name of the artwork, the artist, and a very brief description of the piece. In the second paragraph, analyze the piece by telling me how that piece of art demonstrates at least three of the ideas/emphases of the Renaissance. I've attached an example below of what such a reflection could look like. I chose Michelangelo's David (you cannot pick this piece to analyze). Feel free to use this as a model as you draft your own reflection.

Classical & Christian Studies 11: I'd like you to use the chart we filled out this week to write a reflection in which you address how Milton attempts to justify the ways of God. Focus on TWO of the most important questions raised about God's justice by Milton and how/where he answers them. End with one paragraph about whether you think his answers to these questions are good or satisfactory. Do reference the book if possible, but you don't need a works cited page or other MLA conventions/header/etc. (though do tell me book/line numbers for any references). Do make it double-spaced. There is a 2.5 page maximum for this assignment.

Classical & Christian Studies 12: Next week I'll give you a few questions (3ish) about the apsects of Chesterton we've read so far. Look over our reading/notes in preparation for that. Pay particular attention to...

Classical & Christian Studies 12: The past week we've discussed Chesterton's insistence that nothing can be uninteresting, a call to pay attention to the mundane things of the world. To that end, I want you to complete the exercise with an onion I handed out. It will require 1 onion, a paring knife, and about an hour alone and silently. Your list of tasks for this weekend is:

- Read the selection from Supper of the Lamb that I printed off for you.
- Follow its instructions with the onion as you do so. You must take this seriously and do what it says, even if it feels odd or strange. The goal is to attend closely to the task. Notice, and reflect. (And enjoy!)
- AFTER: look up a picture of St. Basil's Cathedral; spend at least 5 minutes looking at it.
- AFTER: listen to this unaccompanied sonata for violin by Bach (it's only 5 minutes).
- AFTER: print off this document and fill it out, then bring it to class on Tuesday.
- OPTIONAL: Find some way to cook and consume the onion you chopped.

I will assign lighter homework the next couple of weeks to compensate for this larger assignment.

Week 11 Homework (11/15, 11/18)

Government: Read the rest of the FIRST part of Rousseau and take notes. What is man like in the state of nature?

European History I: I'm going to ask you 6 questions on Tuesday about intellectual life in the middle ages. Look over your notes and read pages 309-315 to prepare.

Classical & Christian Studies 10: Finish reading Book 8 of The Aeneid, and fill out your worksheet (drawing the shield of Aeneas). You'll have a quiz over Books 7-8 next week.

Classical & Christian Studies 11: Answer all of your reading questions (except question 4) from your Book 7 worksheet. Then, study for a recitation quiz next week. I'll ask you to recite the first 11 lines (though "hard to belief may seem").

Classical & Christian Studies 12: Read the rest of the chapter on Pride and fill out your worksheet. Then, read the next two chapters—Charity and Hope. I've attached questions below.

Classical & Christian Studies 10: Finish reading Book 7 of The Aeneid (skim it), and fill out your worksheet. Then, I’d like you to write the Book 7 paragraph from your procedures document.

Classical & Christian Studies 11: Read the rest of Paradise Lost Book 6 and annotate. Then, I'd like you to use your text to write me a short response (1-2 paragraphs), in which you compare and contrast the notions of freedom discussed by Satan and Abdiel in lines 148-190. Please refer to the text. You may also refer to Book 5, lines 772-848.

Classical & Christian Studies 12: We’ll have some kind of quiz over the major points of the first 6 chapters of Book 3 of Mere Christianity. Look those chapters and your notes over in preparation. Also someone plan a movie night to watch Casablanca sometime; I'll bring the milk.

Week 8 Homework (10/25, 10/28)

Government: Study for a quiz over our discussions on Paul (Romans 12-13, Galatians 5).

European History I: Study for a quiz over Church & State. Understand well how, 1) the papacy rose to be a temporal power; 2) the church conflicted with the state in the Middle Ages, especially through the Investiture Crisis; and 3) what the theoretical relationship between church and state was, as expressed in the theory of the two swords. If you need extra context, look in your book the the chapter on church and state (ch. 8).

Classical & Christian Studies 10: Finish reading Book 6 of The Aeneid and finish your worksheet. When we're finished discussing the book, we'll have a quiz over books 5-6 (likely Thursday).

Classical & Christian Studies 11: Read the rest of Book 5 of Paradise Lost. Annotate! I'd also like you to handwrite your recitation 2 times on a sheet of paper. You will turn that in for credit.

Government: I've attached an article below, which touches upon the notion of freedom and the two ways it can be understood. Read it, annotate it (I will check). I'd like you to EITHER pick the most important thing he says that you agree with, OR something he said you think he gets fundamentally wrong. Mark the sentence(s), then explain your choice by writing a few sentences at the end of the article.

European History I: I've included two primary sources below for you to read. Each is a declaration written by a pope in the Middle Ages. Please read them and on a separate sheet of paper (put answers to all on 1 sheet) answer the questions at the end of each document. I know they can be difficult to understand, so just try your best!

Classical & Christian Studies 10: Read the prompt for your midterm paper over The Aeneid. This weekend you will do an outline of your paper (not write the paper). Read the prompt for details.

European History I: Study for a quiz over Norse mythology. I've included below the description of Ragnarok we read in class for you to study. I'd also like you to read the chapter in your book over the Norse.

Government: Once we finish reading the selection from Aristotle, we will have a quiz over the material of his we've discussed. Begin studying for that.

European History I: Read the story about the creation of the world and write a paragraph summary of what's described by Heimdall. Study for a quiz over lesson 1.3—the Franks, Charlemagne, and the Holy Roman Empire.

Government: Study for a short quiz over the first Plato reading (focus on the chart and some of the larger considerations of the reading). Enjoy a light weekend of work for this class.

European History I: Study for a short quiz over the fall of Western Rome and the Byzantine Empire. We'll have that on Tuesday!

Classical & Christian Studies 10: Do the first homework assignment from the packet I handed out day one. Refer to the packet of information I gave out on the first day for examples of good and bad homework responses.

Classical & Christian Studies 11: Write me 1-2 paragraphs responding to this question by referencing Book 1 of Paradise Lost: "Christian tradition says that demons can’t be saved. What in Milton’s presentation of Satan’s inner life and actions gives us reasons to think this is true?" Refer to the packet of information I gave out on the first day for examples of good and bad homework responses.

Classical & Christian Studies 12: Read through (which means including) "The Tower of Babel" in part 1 of Irenaeus. Answer the questions on your handout that correspond to these sections, including the summaries.

Week 1 Homework (9/6, 9/9)

Government: Return your signed syllabus. It will be a grade. Read through the rest of the first selection from Plato. Mark up your reading and try to make sense of his argument (how many principles there are in the soul, and what their virtues are, and how that relates to justice). We'll discuss it on Tuesday.

European History I: Return your signed syllabus. It will be a grade. Read the rest of your poem from Hucbald. Memorize the italicized line (in English). You may have a memorization quiz over that line...so be prepared!

Classical & Christian Studies 10: Print and fill out the "Identification" section of the Book 1 worksheet I attached below. The back of your book has the glossary! Then, read the first 41 lines of Book 1 and annotate! I will check your book to see how you're annotating!

Classical & Christian Studies 11: Return your signed syllabus. It will be a grade. Finish the Book 1 translation and summary, if you didn't. Then, read pages vii-xiv in the Introduction, the subsection "Biography" about Milton's life.

Classical & Christian Studies 12: Return your signed syllabus. It will be a grade. Read pages 14-17— "The Logic of the Demonstration"—and pages 23-26—"Irenaeus' Scriptural Hermeneutic." Take some notes, and come ready to answer questions about both short sections.
