Program Information

This is the second year of the Okinawa Camp, and we will be adding overnight stays in Yambaru Forest, Okinawa. We will spend 3 nights in the rich natural forest Yambaru which was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021, then stay for 1 night at the Hamabaru Resort, and finally stay at Minshukus (private guest houses) in Iejima Island. This is a camp where you can fully enjoy Okinawa's Yambaru/Hamabaru, ocean, forest, and big sky, and a multilingual nature camp. Yambaru is written as ``Yamabara,'' and Hamabaru is written as ``Hamabara.'' In addition to the Okinawan dialect and Iejima Island language, students from Taiwan's Wego Elementary School will participate in this camp, so not only Japanese, but also Taiwanese, Chinese, and English will be spoken. We also plan to have participants from South Korea, Vietnam, and other countries. Each activity is carried out in groups (accommodation rooms and tents)and many parts of the activity will be discussed and decided by the group. Let's all think about what we would like to do during group activities, based on the information introduced on this page!

The program and details of each activity are still not decided but in addition to Hippo activities, experiencing Okinawan culture (Sanshin, Karate etc.), playing in the ocean, overnight stay at Minshukus (private guest houses) on Iejima Island, and outdoor activities in the Yambaru Discovery Forest will be added this year! Let’s experience the great outdoors together in the Yambaru Forest!! Elementary school students from Taiwan, are also scheduled to participate too.

Hippo Activity:Let's talk and play in multiple languages and get to know each other!

Yambaru:The northern area of Okinawa's main island, known as Yambaru to the locals, and an area registered as a World Natural Heritage site.

Hamabaru Beach: A beach where you can feel the ocean and wind. Snorkeling is highly recommended, especially if you want to see a lot of fish in the natural shallow terrain.

Iejima Island:An overnight stay at a private guest house (Minshuku) is an inspiring experience where you will learn many things through interaction with the host of the private house, by experiencing island life.
OIST: The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) conducts cross-disciplinary research to explore new frontiers in science.

Karate & Sanshin(Okinawan traditional three-stringed instrument): Learn the typical Okinawan culture.
