  • Highlights from Homework:
    • Sasha Bacot: Question: How did the choice of mode help develop the argument? Give specific evidence to support your reasoning.

"Maynard argues that a variety of factors cause poor body image, and in order to prove that each of the factors she discusses lead to poor body image, she makes use of causal analysis in explaining exactly how each factor contributes to body negativity. Through the use of causal analysis, Maynard establishes a clear cause and effect relationship between each factor and the negative body image it leads to. For example, Maynard claims that parents can sometimes cause poor body image, and she develops this claim by explaining how parents who are “constantly dieting or have body or food issues of their own” influence their children's’ “ability to build self esteem,” which may result in issues with body image. By using causal analysis, Maynard develops a clear connection between the family environment and body image. "

Highlights from Quiz:

  • Gavin McLaurin: Question: Discuss the significance of the title and analyze how both the title and the choice of the "narration" mode help to develop the author' primary purpose. (Obviously, you'll need to identify that purpose...)

"In Maya Angelou's "My Name is Margaret," Maya tells a story about herself when she worked under a white woman named Mrs. Cullinan. Mrs. Cullinan was described to have racial prejudice against her mostly African American staff, including Margaret. Mrs. Cullinan wanted to call Margaret "Mary" as Mary was much shorter. Margaret took it as an attack to her identity, and acted out against Mrs. Cullinan, showing Angelou's purpose of not letting anyone take one's name as it is their identity, and also standing up against racial persecution. The title "My Name is Margaret" helps develop the purpose as it relates to Margaret's unwavering desire to keep her name as Margaret and to not let anyone change it based on convenience. Using the narration mode gave a personal connection to the audience, allowing them to understand Margaret;'s emotions and, ultimately her decision to break Mrs. Cullinan's china, as Mrs. Cullinan treated her poorly."
