Note About Point Of View:
- Objective point of view recounts only what the characters say and do, offering no insight into their thinking or analysis of events; all interpretation is left to the reader.
- Stream-of-consciousness point of view takes the readers inside the mind of a narrator, recounting thoughts, impressions, and feelings, from either a first-person or a third-person limited omniscient perspective. The reader is privy to exactly what the character is thinking, without the filters of causality or logic. Such interior monologues are often characterized by fragments, swift (or entirely absent) transitions, and a free association of ideas.
- Layered Point of view is utilized when there are multiple perspectives--sometimes even from the same person. In many cases, layered point of view can be observed through flashbacks.
- Narrative frame, or frame story, is a type of layered point of view. A narrative frame establishes who is telling the main story and under what circumstances. Narrative frames often contain a shift in perspective.
- A limited omniscient narrator tells us what just one major or minor character is thinking or feeling. This perspective both conceals and reveals. While it restricts how much readers know, it can also give readers insight into who a character is and how that character sees the world.
Homework:
- Read "Leaf By Niggle"; "Yes, She's a Christ Figure" and "Or the Bible" from How To Read Literature Like a Professor by Friday, September 13th. Bring both texts to class!! Be prepared for a graded Socratic Seminar. Note: I suggest you read "Leaf by Niggle" first and then the chapters from How to Read. Determine if anything in this short story applies to the chapters.
- Vocabulary Quiz Unit 1 PRACTICE Quiz Tuesday, September 13th
- Vocabulary Quiz Unit 1 September 17th (click here and scroll down for the list)
- Remember that we will continue with literacy journey over the course of the next few days.
Organizational Notes: I will collect IPNs when there are 4 entries. IPN entries so far:

- "The White Quail" (group paragraph regarding symbolism prompt)
- The Snake" (How does point of view in the text create tone?)
