Capital City and Population Size:
The capital city of Turkey is Ankara, which is located near the middle part of Turkey. It used to be called Angora. Even though it's the capital, it's not Turkey's largest city. The largest city in Turkey is in fact its old capital… Istanbul! Which was not actually called Istanbul while it was the capital. It was called Constantinople. The name of Istanbul changed after the Grand National Assembly of Turkey moved the capital to Ankara in 1923.
One of the two important places in Turkey is Istanbul, the largest city in terms of population. The second attraction in Turkey is Ankara, its capital. Istanbul was once Constantinople in the Ottoman Empire. It also holds historical value because of all the old architecture including: the Blue Mosque, and the Haifa Sophia. In Ankara, two attractions there are: Ankara Castle, and Anıtkabir.
The longitude and latitude of Ankara is 39.93° North, 32.85° East and for Istanbul, 41.00° North, 28.97° East. If you looked on a globe, Boston and Istanbul would be close to the same latitude. Turkey is a crossroads between Europe, Asia and Africa.
For some reason the most popular and populous city in the country of Turkey isn't actually its own capital. The most populous city in Turkey, where about 20 percent of the Turkish population lives, is none other than Istanbul. Then naturally the other popular city is Ankara, its capital. The next city on our list (not in rank order) is Izmir. It’s a beautiful seaside town that sits by the Ægean Sea. The next city is Bursa, it has the mosque Ulu Cami, it is the biggest mosque in Bursa it has 20 domes supported by twelve columns. The next one is Ephesus. It's an ancient Roman city and it is worth looking at.
