TOPIC - TOYS
It has been another busy few weeks in year 1 and the children have been fantastic; they have settled well into the routines of year 1 and have shown lots of enthusiasm for their learning.
Over the past couple of weeks we have continued our focus on Toys and in our history lessons the children have started to think about how we know if a toy is old. We were very lucky to have a wonderful toy workshop from History off the Page where the children and adults had a lot of fun exploring lots of different toys from the past. The children had the opportunity to practise being amateur archaeologists and dig for artefacts before being asked to sort their finds by material and age. There were also stories about toys and lots of information about toys from the past as well as an afternoon of crafts where the children were able to make peg dolls and spinning tops.
In English we have been reading the story, 'Traction Man is here' and the children had a lot of fun acting out the story in the classroom. They have also been practising writing sentences about the story remembering their capital letters for names and starting to learn about nouns and verbs. In Maths, we have been focusing on comparing and have been looking at comparing weight and length as well as sets of objects. and the children impressed as with their ability to use mathematical symbols for greater than, less than and equal to.
As a whole school, the children have also participated in assemblies focusing on Harvest Festival and National Poetry Day and have been enjoying learning new songs in their KS1 singing assemblies.
