TOPIC - Planet Earth

Wow, what a busy few weeks we have had in year 1! We had a very successful science week with lots of different experiments taking place and it was amazing to see lots of children from Kingfishers taking part in the science fair and confidently explaining their experiments to children and adults from across the school. We also had a fantastic trip to Hobbledown Farm and loved seeing all of the animals, as well as playing in the playground. In between, we have also managed to fit in lots of learning which the children have engaged with as they continue to impress us with their enthusiasm and hard work!

In English, the children have been looking at the books 'Zeraffa Giraffa' by Dianne Hofmeyer and Jane Ray and 'The Selfish Crocodile' by Charles Faustin. Both books link to our topic of Planet Earth and thinking about the different places in the world.  The children wrote some great letters in role as Zeraffa Giraffa detailing the journey he makes and this week they greatly enjoyed acting out the story of 'The Selfish Crocodile', taking it in turns to pretend to be the different characters.

In Maths, we have moved onto teen numbers and have been exploring odd and even numbers, related number facts and beginning to think about place value. As always, we use a mix of practical learning using maths resources, activities on Seesaw and worksheets with challenges to extend the children's reasoning and problem solving abilities.

In Geography, we have been doing lots of practical activities exploring maps, learning to use directional language and beginning to understand how to read symbols and keys. As part of their learning, they have created 'messy' maps of the classroom, used a simple map to find features in their playground and drawn their own maps (with keys) of the playground.

In RE, we have been focusing on the Easter story and thinking about the importance of the days leading up to Easter Sunday, in particular Palm Sunday and why Easter is an important time for Christians.

In Science we have been learning about animals and deciding on whether they are herbivores, carnivores or omnivores. We have also been learning about their features and whether they are reptiles, amphibians, birds, fishes or mammals.

In DT we have been looking at free standing structures and learning about how to make our own model swing.  We have been deciding what makes the best anchor for our swing and how to secure our swing to a base.

We also enjoyed welcoming all parents to the Year 1 reading cafe this week. Thank you to everyone who came along.

We wish you all a lovely Easter holiday!
