This week in English, year 4 planned, wrote and edited their newspaper reports based on chapter 6 from The Firework Maker's Daughter. They were able to use direct and reported speech effectively within their writing and included all the features of a news report.
We completed the multiplication check this week and were really proud of how hard the children tried. Well done to all the children who have worked hard on their tables at home and thank you for supporting your children with this. We also looked at Roman Numerals up to 100.
In English, year 5 have continued reading 'The Explorer' by Katherine Rundell. The four intrepid children have just cooked a meal for the explorer in order to thank him for teaching them how to hunt. Inspired by this latest installment, we have planned our own narratives, focusing on descriptive language and speech. In preparation for our writing next week, we have learned how to punctuate speech, and how to correctly write a dialogue between characters, ensuring we start on a new line for each new speaker. In maths, we have continued to learn how to convert various units of measurement (e.g. grams and kilograms, millilitres and litres). We have also learnt about the difference between imperial and metric units of measurement and how to convert between the two.
In Years 4 and 5 this week, we have been learning about the location and temperatures of different deserts around the world during our Geography lesson. In science we have made a timeline of the developmental stages of a human. In music we have continued to practise our samba percussion performance. We are now outside for both PE lessons, playing cricket and developing our athletic skills.
Next week, year 4 will be completing grammar and maths revision ahead of our final assessments of the year. The two assessments taking place next week are Spelling & Grammar and Arithmetic. The following week, the children will undertake assessments in Reading and Maths Reasoning.
Next week, year 5 will be recapping relative clauses before going on to write their narratives based on Chapter 20 of 'The Explorer.' In maths, we will conclude our Measurement topic by learning how to read the temperature. We will then move on to a new unit of Area & Perimeter, beginning with recapping finding the area and perimeter of rectangles and squares before moving onto composite shapes.
Next week in Years 4 and 5, we will continue to look at the human body in Science, and we will be exploring the physical features of deserts in Geography.
It is our sports day on Friday 21st June, we look forward to welcoming you all to spectate.
