The Promise by Nicola Davis

Nicola Davies reads her book here and you can listen to two poems read by her here 'The Secret of the Egg' and 'Raised in Rhyme'.

Things you might do after sharing:

- The Promise: what promises could you each make?

- Plant seeds, fruit and vegetables.

- Explore eggs

- Write poems

- Explore anything in the house and look at different ways of looking at them, for example a cushion. Describe what the look like, feel like etc.

Home Learning

We want to help schools and parents with home learning to ensure children make the most progress during these challenging times. This home learning section includes the Term 3 activities set out for each year group to make learning easy.

As the programme has been designed for schools across the UK, we have created this getting started guide for parents which explains how Monster Phonics works. Monster Phonics follows the national curriculum and is recognised by the government as a key resource to be used by schools. It is fun and engaging being based around 10 Monsters. Have fun learning about each of them.

Home education: Six quick and easy key stage 1 activities

Many of the resources and support being offered for home education focus on key stage 2 and above. Here, Jack Dabell offers six quick activities for younger children in key stage 1

Planning activities for children now they are learning at home is a whole new ball game with many unexpected challenges. There is a lot to consider: How will your activity translate at home? Will the adults at home need more explanation? How much time will they have to explain the work? How do you differentiate effectively? What resources do they have on hand?

If you need some ideas which can work well at home, here are six activities for children in key stage 1 that are simple to explain, resource and differentiate. They are also fun to complete and offer a valuable learning opportunity.

If you have children working at KS1, this channel is a gem. With weekly episodes spanning about 30 minutes each, WordWorld is produced in such a way that words are “the stars of the show”. Almost like a show-and-tell activity, objects are built with the letters that make up the word they represent. A great way to encourage reading, writing and spelling.

The child-friendly version of the immensely popular network National Geographic. Nat Geo Kids features videos about animals, science, culture and much more. The videos are short but informative, and there’s loads for your child to choose from to help feed their curiosity.

Storytelling Adventures Activity

Take your pupils on a storytelling journey!

This exciting interactive activity can be used in class (along with the supporting resources below) or at home. It uses the analogy of a train journey to teach pupils how to structure a great story from start to finish. Along the way they'll pick up top tips, be inspired by famous authors, and complete challenges to develop their creative writing skills.
