World Book Night - 23 April

World Book Night is a national celebration of reading and books that takes place on 23 April every year. Events up and down the country run by individuals and organisations celebrate the difference that reading makes to people’s lives, and everyone from publishers to librarians, and local businesses to the general public can get involved.

World Book Night is run by The Reading Agency, a national charity that tackles life’s big challenges through the proven power of reading.

Find out more on how you can receive a free audio-book to listen to on World Book Night, and take a look at the World Book Night 2020 Booklist for reading inspiration.

The last few weeks have put an undeniable strain on educators as they were propelled into remote teaching with little to no warning. To assist educators in their transition to remote teaching, we have compiled a range of online tools teachers can use for lesson prep, student engagement and supporting pupils during this period.

We hope this blog provides some support to make this difficult time more manageable. We will continue to add resources to this post as we uncover them.

Video lessons for primary age children

These short videos are intended to provide primary school pupils with interactive lessons while they are at home. Teachers can choose how regularly they set them, but it is important that, within each batch, they are set in the suggested order. Most lessons are 15 to 20 minutes long, each ending with suggested follow-up tasks. All lessons exemplify a Teaching for Mastery approach to maths. The current plan is for a new batch of five lessons to be added here every week.

Home-Activity-Pack.pdf

This is a games-based activity that puts to use the skills developed in the first three weeks of sessions.

We've got two examples (one indoors, one outdoors) but want to see what your pupils can come up with . We want to see the best games that they can come up with around their homes.

Our favourite will win a Chance to Shine kitbag , so encourage them to share their games with us! (Videos can be shared with us on our social media channels or emailed to us at info@chancetoshine.org)

For a new session every week, check out our Twitter, Facebook or Instagram page.

Please encourage parents to sign up to the FREE Chance to Shine Portal for more activities to do at home with their children. Send them this link: bit.ly/CTSparents.

Learn at Home with now>press>play!

now>press>play is an active audio resource that engages children in the curriculum through emotion, imagination and movement. Immersed in sound, your child will become the main character in a story, meeting people, discovering places and solving problems on an educational adventure they’ll never forget!

How does it work?

  1. Write North, South, East, West on paper and stick one on each wall*
  2. Put on wireless headphones (if you have them)
  3. Stand in the centre of the room and… now press play!
  4. Follow the instructions in the story
  5. Afterwards have a discussion and use the follow-on activities

*If your child is listening to a Reception story, you don’t need to do this.

Top tips:

  • Your Audio Adventure will be enhanced if you use wireless headphones / earbuds
