YEAR 2
YEAR 2
We have had another busy fortnight in Year 2!
Writing:
This week in Writing, we were inspired by the story "The Journey Home" to write persuasive letters. We imagined we were one of the characters trying to convince the others to follow a particular course of action. We focused on using strong arguments, emotive language and persuasive techniques, such as rhetorical questions and exclamations, to convince our readers.
Maths:
We began our journey into the world of fractions this week! We started by learning how to find fractions of shapes by shading in equal parts, then moved on to finding fractions of sets of objects, like finding half of a group of 10 counters. We also began looking at finding fractions of numbers, for example, finding one quarter of 20.
Science:
In Science, we became material investigators! We explored the suitability of different materials for various purposes and investigated why this was the case.
Geography:
We embarked on a virtual voyage around the world in Geography! Using Google Earth, we explored the five oceans, learning their names and locations. We discussed the creatures that live in them and the different ways humans use the oceans for transport, food, and leisure. We also investigated our local area, identifying key landmarks and discussing the human and physical geography of Sutton.
Art:
In Art, we experimented with mixing colours to create different shades and tones. We then looked at the contrasting brushstrokes of famous artists like Van Gogh, with his thick, swirling brushstrokes, and Cezanne, who used small, square brushstrokes to build up form. We had a go at recreating these different techniques in our own artwork, inspired by the colours and landscapes of the artists.
Sincerely,
The Year 2 Team
