Year 1
Year 1
As we come to the end of week 4 already, we reflect on all the beautiful learning and progress our Year Ones have made thus far.
In the past two weeks we have explored our senses, started a new writing book, got very messy in art and watched our parents discover and show us their favourite toys growing up.
In Mathematics we have been continuing our journey into addition and subtraction. We have focused on our story maps and how eating 5 of the 6 cupcakes Miss Mitchell baked will only leave one left. We have worked hard to find new strategies and missing parts in our equations.
In Science we have had a blast. We have been learning about our bodies and all five senses. We focused on taste and touch these last two weeks. We had fun creating and touching different materials and labelling them soft, hard or even bumpy. We then explored our taste buds this past week. We had to taste different flavoured crisps and label if they were Prawn Cocktail, cheese and onion or ready salted. We then moved to our tables and distinguished between salty, sour, sweet and the worst of all bitter. Bitter involved 100% dark chocolate which was not a class favourite and needed a lot of water after.
In Art, we explored creating our own clay moulds using different objects. We all looked a bit colourful afterwards but created some beautiful artwork. We also learnt about the rubbing technique and created patterns using different wax crayons against objects found around the classroom.
In English we have been exploring our new book, 'The Dragon Machine'. This story is about George who sees dragons all round him and tries to find their home in the wilderness. The only problem is that he is the only one who can see them. We have been using adjectives to describe the dragon machine and had the opportunity to create our very own class dragons. We will be writing a descriptive piece using our new adjectives.
In History we had the chance to watch and gather information from different sources about toys from the past. We watched videos of our grownups and their favourite toys and looked at how they are similar and different. We drew our favourite and our grownups favourite. We then looked at how teddy bears have changed over the past 100 years. We created timelines to show the changes in materials and looks of teddy bears.
In R.E. we continued to look at Hinduism and discover the different personalities of Brahman. We learnt about the five different deities and their roles. We explored their looks and how they are all apart of Brahman.
In both emerald and jade class we read the 'Queens hat' and 'Starbird' as a part of our read aloud stories.
We also had the special opportunity to learn more about dog safety. We met Betsy, who was a beautiful dog. We learnt how important it is to think about how a dog is feeling and to give them some space when they need it. We loved hearing about how we can respect animals!
