Welcome back to the final term in Year 5. We all hope you have had a restful Easter Holidays. The children have already covered so much in the first two weeks of this term!
In English we have started looking at a new book: 'The Explorer' by Katherine Rundell. All the children are really enjoying the book so far and have made excellent comparisons betwee this book and 'Kensuke's Kingdom', which we read earlier in the year. We have been working on a narrative for the last two weeks, retelling the first part of the book, including the plane crash. We have developed our narratives, by not just thinking about fronted adverbials and expanded noun phrases, but also using speech to advance the action and to develop our the reader's understanding of characters. We typed our narratives up and then used olex.ai to produce pictures of our narratives!
In Maths we have started an exciting new topic looking at angles. We have identified different angles and calculated angles on a straight line and around a point. The children really enjoyed using the protractors to measure and draw their own angles. We found it a little bit tricky to start, but we were able to persevere and become much more accurate with our measurements.
In Science we have started a new topic of forces. Last week we investigated whether larger planets had more gravity and this week we looked at air resistance. The children loved making parachutes and dropping them to see if the size of the parachute affected the speed at which it fell to the floor.
In History we have been looking at Victorian censuses and speaking like Historians to describe Victorian working conditions using a variety of sources as evidence.
Reading Diaries
We would like to remind you that all children should be reading at least 5 times a week and Reading Diaries should be handed in every Monday. Reading more together is incredibly beneficial and it will help the children in school, especially in their English lessons!
Homework
This term, we have asked the children to complete at least 3 pieces of homework from the homework grid. Please note, this is now not an 'optional homework grid'. Thank you to all of the children who have completed fantastic pieces of homework so far, from artwork, to making parachutes, to researching traditional dress in different cultures and completing their own censuses of their families.
Chrome Books
Chrome books should be brought to school and charged, every day.
