Year 1
Year 1
Hello and welcome back to our penultimate half term! The children have come back refreshed and ready to learn and we have made a great start.
Our most exciting topic this half term is guided by the state of the beans we are growing to answer our question: Does a bean need water to grow? Our science topic is all about plants and a part of this is monitoring the growth of the beans. The beans we have planted this year are the result of the crop grown by Y1 last year! We had so many beans all of the children have taken one home to grow. Please send in pictures via Seesaw if your bean is flourishing and if you do not have a garden, it can get planted at school once the first leaves are showing. For the first time Mrs Holmes can remember, the bean in Jade class is growing faster than Emerald ... our green fingers have finally arrived!
In maths, we completed the unit on measuring and have been very impressed with how good the children have been when both estimating length to 20cm and measuring objects with a ruler. This week we have begun counting in multiples of 2, 5 and 10 in preparation for counting amounts of money in our next unit with 2p 5p and 10p coins to the value of 20p.
In Literacy, we have been exploring the poem ' The Nut Tree' by Julia Donaldson. we had great fun when each group learnt a stanza of the poem and then performed it to the class. The children are currently planning their own woodland poems!
We started our History topic which is all about Explorers and we have begun to find out facts about Christopher Columbus, Mary Kingsley, Matthew Henson and Dame Ellen MacArthur. We are looking forward to discovering more about them.
In art we are looking at flora and fauna. We started the topic by discussing the work of a few different artists and then drew things that we had liked from their paintings and sketches. Both classes then swapped classrooms to look at all the books laid out on the tables so that we could all appreciate the amazing pictures we had drawn.
Finally, we had a fantastic time this Wednesday with our 'Sports Festival' and the weather was amazing, if a little hotter than we would have expected for the time of year! The children participated in a range of sporting activities and really enjoyed themselves.
Thank you again for your continued support,
The Y1 Team
