Happy New Year! Year 2 were excited to come back to school after the Christmas holidays. They have settled exceptionally well and they have been working extra hard as usual.
In Maths we have been learning to measure objects in metres and centimetres using standard units of measure such as rulers and tape measures. We have checked our estimations when comparing different objects by measuring them accurately following a set of rules, for example, starting from zero and holding the ruler correctly. Next week we will learn to weigh and compare the mass of different items using scales. You could help your child at home by weighing food items when cooking, or comparing the weight of objects when going shopping.
In English we are exploring the text 'The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark'. We are learning about different types of owls so we can create a non-chronological report about our preferred type of owl, using eye-catching vocabulary and other features specific to this genre. We will also be focusing on how the present tense is used when reporting facts.
In Science, we used Nearpod to recall our previous learning of materials. We classified objects according to their properties and we identified the suitability of materials for certain objects. This half term, we will be learning about animals and their habitats, exploring different environments and how these are suitable for a varied range of animals.
In PSHE we continue to think about our dreams and goals and identify the steps needed to achieve a goal even when we find the task difficult. We understand that if we want to achieve our goals, we need to keep practising, work hard, persevere and never give up. In RE we explored Taoism and learned some Tai Chi movements. It was really fun and relaxing.
