Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Year 5! The children have had a great start to the year and all of the team are really impressed with how well they have settled back into school routines! We have been incredibly busy in these first few weeks, but here is a quick overview of what we have been looking at:
Writing
We have started reading the book: 'London Eye Mystery' and have already completed one piece of work based on it - we wrote diary entries as the main character Ted reflecting on how we felt about our cousin coming to visit. We have just started a new topic of newspaper reports. Ask us about the newsflashes we created on Canva! The children loved getting into character as news reporters.
Maths
Our Maths topic of Place Value has seen the children looking at numbers up to 1,000,000. This is a big step from Year 4, but the children can already confidently read and write numbers as well as compare and order them.
Science
In Science, we’ve started a new topic on Mixtures and Separation. The children had great fun working out how to separate a messy mixture of flour, rice and pasta, pretending we were gold prospectors panning for gold!
History
The children have thoroughly enjoyed the start of our History topic for this term - The Tudors. We had also received some fantastic pieces of home learning based around the topic - well done!
Music
We have started looking at a traditional sea shanty - 'What Shall we do with a Drunken Sailor'. The children have loved singing this song, as well as trying to keep a steady rhythm to it by playing a cup game to accompany it.
Well done to those children who have already shown us pieces of their home learning - we have loved seeing how engaged the children have been with these pieces of work!
