Welcome to Year 2! The children have had a fantastic start to the year and they have been working hard to settle into their new routines. Here’s a glimpse of what we’ve been up to during these first few weeks:
Reading
Our Reading Squad has kicked off this week and the children are enjoying reading together three times a week. In addition to this, they have been working on reading comprehension tasks, helping to deepen their understanding of the texts they encounter.
Writing
We’ve had an exciting start in Writing! The children have been exploring two captivating stories: We Are Here, a book about our planet Earth, and Tiddalick the Frog, an Aboriginal tale from Australia. The classes have acted out these stories, explored vocabulary and retold the story in their own words.
Maths
We’ve begun our Maths No Problem scheme and we have been exploring place value. The children have been learning about 2-digit numbers, focusing on how tens and ones combine to make these numbers. We have done this by using a range of practical methods and we have applied these to problem solving questions.
Science
In Science, we’ve started a new topic called Life Processes and Habitats. The children have been investigating the different life processes and sorting items into the following categories: Living, Dead and Never Alive.
Geography
Our Geography topic, 'Would you rather live in a hot or cold place?' has taken the class on a journey around the globe. The children have been busy identifying the seven continents. They’ve also enjoyed exploring the North and South Pole and comparing their features.
Art
In Art, we have been gathering inspiration from nature! The children have collected interesting objects from the school grounds and used them to create a 3D collage. They then drew detailed pictures from these materials - they have done a brilliant job!
It’s been a wonderful start to the term, and we’re so proud of how engaged and enthusiastic the children have been. We look forward to seeing what the rest of the term brings!
