A warm welcome back to all our Year 4 children and their families! It's wonderful to see everyone settled in so well already. We're excited to embark on another year of learning and growth together. We have lots of exciting projects and adventures planned, and we can't wait to see what we can achieve as a team.
Year 4 has been immersed in the lush world of "The Great Kapok Tree" this week. We've explored the diverse creatures of the rainforest by creating poems, using repetition and expanded noun phrases to bring these animals to life. Next, we practised using fronted adverbials and personification, adding depth and dynamism to our writing. These skills will be put to the test next week as we craft vivid setting descriptions inspired by the Amazon.
In Reading, we have practised using our retrieval and prediction skills to explore extracts from the books Oliver and the Seawigs, Black Beauty, The Fox and the Stork and the short stories La Luna and Coin Operated.
During the past two weeks, in Maths, we have been learning about place value. We have been creating 4 digit numbers to 10,000 and have broken them down into thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. We have also been practising rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. We have just begun our new Maths topic, Adding and Subtracting to 10,000. We have begun with adding 4 digit numbers that don't need to be renamed (carried over). We have used concrete resources, drawn place value charts and used the column method to help us.
In Science, our new topic is Digestion and Food. We have identified the main parts of the Human Digestive System and explored their function. We have also identified the 4 types of human teeth and their function. We have seen that we need a range of different types of teeth so we can bite, tear, chew and grind our food.
Our Geography topic this half term is Why are Rainforests so important? We have identified different biomes around the world and seen how the climate, landscape, animals and plants compare to other biomes. We have also identified significant rivers around the world. Ask your child if they remember any of them.
