Practice Tips
This page has general tips to help anybody.
These tools are here to help you practice efficiently and learn as quickly as possible.
Instrument specific things are on the subpages.
Practice efficiently
Here are some different practice methods that can help you learn your music as quickly as possible.
Shedding
Practicing a section of music repeatedly as many times as possible
Great for difficult technical passages and building endurance
Can also help build muscle memory
Chaining
Start with the first two notes of a difficult section. Add a third note. Once those three sound good, add the next note. Repeat this process until you get through the entire passage.
Great for technical passages, accurate articulations, and building endurance.
Can also help build muscle memory
Slow down
Practice technical passages slowly. Learning it correctly is usually the difficult part. Speeding it up is easier when you can play it correctly.
Be patient when you practice.
For every practice method, a metronome is extremely helpful. It can be difficult to play with a metronome when you first start, but I promise that it will quickly become very helpful.

SmartMusic is a great online resource to help students. The program includes a variety of solos, concert band and jazz band music, and sight reading materials.
