This one-semester course will teach geologic principles during Q1 and astronomy in Q2.* The geology text we will use is Essentials of Geology by authors Lutgens, Tarbuck and Tasa. The astronomy text is entitled Astronomy A Self-Teaching Guide by Moche. Students will have the option to buy the astronomy book if they wish. Learning will be supplemented with online videos, web sites, and guest speakers.
We will make frequent field trips to study geological processes nearby and elsewhere in Vermont and New Hampshire. During the astronomy unit, we will be viewing the heavens at night using telescopes at least once a week. A trip will also be planned to Stellafane in Springfield, VT, to see the telescopes & learn about telescope building.
Students will be graded on classroom and field participation, assignment completion, quizzes and projects.
*Because astronomical and geological events can happen at any time, we will certainly study real-time events when they occur, without regard to which quarter we are in.
