Earth Science Grade 11 – 2016-2017

Room B12
What is this class about?
Earth Science incorporates many scientific disciplines: biology, chemistry, physics, geology, meteorology, oceanography. The Earth is a complex mega-system composed of many inter-related parts. In this class, you will apply and connect your learning to both nearby and exotic locales, events through history, and human activities. The future of our planet depends on a concerned, well-educated population.
We will use a variety of materials in class. You will be doing hands-on labs and activities often. The texts we will use are Foundations of Earth Science (Lutgens & Tarbuck) and Essentials of Geology (Lutgens, Tarbuck, Tasa). We will also source project-based texts and computer-based programs.
To maximize daily hands-on time, you will be expected to watch short video lectures on your own in preparation for class. You will be given the URLs in advance; these can be watched online with a computer or ipod, or can be downloaded for off-line viewing.
Students need feedback on how much and how well they have learned. Short-term (“formative”) assessment will be through classroom activities, observations, and regular reviews of your lab journal. Long-term (“summative”) assessment will be through regular quizzes and exams (which have been shown to deepen long-term memory of the material) and projects. You will get more and specific information about projects and how they will be graded later on.
The students and I will develop the classroom norms and expectations during the first week, which will then be posted on this web page.
