Upcoming Theme of the Fortnight: Developing Pride Week: "Raising Awareness & Acceptance of LGBTQ"
Principal's Message
Module 6 has had a fantastic start with two HIstory trips, Duke of Edinburgh training, year 10 masterclasses, LAT sports competitions and rehearsals for our show. Year 10 students have been completing their speaking exams and it has been inspiring to hear how resilient and confident they have all been when presenting topics of interest to their peers. I was incredibly proud to hear how well our students represented the academy on the Barcelona trip and would like to publicly thank the staff who gave up their own personal time to organise and supervise students on this international excursion!
Last week I delivered assemblies to all year groups about diversity and inclusion and took time to celebrate the incredible numbers of rewards points students have received so far this year. I spoke to students about the expectations regarding the rewards day at the end of the module and am hopeful that all students will work hard to be model LEIGH learners over the next few weeks so that they can partake in the range of activities we are planning for them.

Academy Updates
After School Club via MCAS
If your child goes to a club after-school, you should now be able to see this on your MCAS app. As well as ones they are attending, you can see what ones your child has signed up too.
Blazers
Due to the warm weather, students are NOT required to wear blazers for the reminder of this module. Please ensure students still bring their conduct cards with them daily.
Detentions
On extremely rare occasions in the past, students have built up detentions over a number of days, to avoid students ever having to remember or worry about building up detentions the following has been in place this year:
Students sit up to 2 hours detention the following day, this can include combinations of C1 and C2 detentions. For example, if a student receives 3 C1 detentions in a day, these would all be sat the next day totaling 1hr 30 minutes. As per our policy if a student receive more than 2 hours worth of detentions in a single day, they are in Internal Exclusion the following day until 5pm, clearing these detentions. The Detentions module on MCAS does not have the capability to show combined detentions on one day so we have removed this to avoid confusion for parents following parental feedback.
In order for you to know if your son or daughter has a number of detentions in a day parents need to look at the Rewards and Behaviour section on MCAS and all detentions issued will be sat the next day. We hope that by removing the detentions module which was causing confusion for some parents this will make it simpler for families to understand what their child has the following day. We are updating the Parent Student Handbook to reflect this for next year.
Water Bottles
As the weather is getting warmer, we've noticed the increase in students not bringing a water bottle. Please can we ask that students come to the academy with a water bottle to ensure that they are staying hydrated.
Bike Helmets
Please can we remind parents that if your child is riding to school on a bike that they're wearing a helmet. We've noticed an increase over the last couple of weeks where students are not wearing a helmet.
College Competition Week
If your child has nominated themselves to take part in the college competitions, please can you remind your child that they'll need their PE kit that day; they will be getting changed after school. Timings for this are 3.30pm-4.30pm. Please see the year group and on what day:
Year 7 - Monday 16th June
Year 8 - Tuesday 17th June
Year 9 - Thursday 19th June
Year 10 Masterclasses
Just like to remind parents that all year 10 students should be attending these sessions after school:
English masterclass on Mondays
Science masterclass on Tuesdays
Maths masterclass on Thursday
Year 10 Mock Examination Catch-Up
For those that missed some of their mock exams in May, you'll have been sent the timetable for resits which start next week. These exams will take place after school in room 124. These exams will begin promptly at 3.20pm. If you fail to arrive on time, you will not receive extra time for your paper.
Where there is more than one exam taking place, they will all be in the same room.
If you believe your child should attend an exam that their name isn't listed for, please advise their form tutor or Mrs Holmes so that we can arrange for them to attend.
Please note that these will not be the same papers as were sat in May to ensure that the process is fair and that no one sitting the exams later is at an unfair advantage.
Barcelona 2025
At the end of module 5, some of the LAR staff took a group of students to Barcelona on a 3-day trip. Despite the really early start (3.30am!), everyone was really excited to get on the plane and to practice some of the Spanish we had been learning in lessons.
On the first day, we saw the 'Sagrada Familia' and dined at the Hard Rock Cafe, where the students admired some fantastic memorabilia items from the music scene.
The next day was mostly spent at the beach, enjoying the lovely weather Barcelona offered.
On the last day, we got to visit the Camp Nou museum, which was the highlight of the trip for many.
These three days were a time to feel proud of our school community for the kindness and curiosity that our students continued to showcase, as well as a time for enjoyment and strengthening bonds. But don't just take our word for it!
We've asked some of the students on the trip to write a few lines about their thoughts and feelings, so you can also read about how they experienced this trip. Coming soon ...
Duke of Edinburgh
On Monday 2nd June, some much needed training was delivered expertly by the amazing MOACC team for our new bronze DofE students in preparation for their expedition in July.
Well done to all of those involved, and a massive thank you to the MOACC team.
Year 10 Spoken Language Exams
A huge well done to all of our Year 10 English students who have completed their spoken language exams this week.
They showed real grit as speakers, and empathy and respect as an audience. The English department are proud of each and every one of you!
Year 9 Duxford Trip
On Thursday 6th June, 90 Year 9 students enjoyed a memorable trip to the Imperial War Museum in Duxford. They explored a wide range of fascinating exhibitions, including the American Air Museum, the Battle of Britain hangar, and even stepped inside the famous Concorde prototype. A highlight of the day was watching historic aircrafts like Spitfires and Hurricanes take off and land on the museum’s active runway. Students showed great curiosity and respect throughout the visit, fully embracing the experience and representing the school with pride. It was a fantastic day that brought history to life.
Year 8 London Ripper Trip
On June 12th, 60 Year 8 students enjoyed an exciting History trip to London. The day began with a walking tour around Whitechapel, where students explored the infamous Jack the Ripper murders and walked through the historic Spitalfields Markets. They also gained insight into the area’s fascinating history, including migration, working conditions during the Industrial Revolution, and local architecture. After a short coach ride, the group visited the thrilling London Dungeons, experiencing immersive exhibits about the 1665 plague, the Gunpowder Plot, and the witch hunts. Both students and staff survived the London Dungeons and had an unforgettable day of learning outside the classroom!
Nature Reserve
The activity in the nature reserve is picking up! The latest animals caught on camera include blackbirds, great tits, rabbits, foxes, hedgehogs and Leigh the shrew! We are hoping to take some close-ups of the insects soon too!
MedwayGo Escape Room
A classroom became "Isabella's bedroom," a place of demonic possession, as 24 nominated years 7 and 8 students plunged into an escape room adventure hosted by MedwayGo during module 5. Youth workers Dave and Lindsey set the stage for a high-stakes challenge: groups of eight students had just one hour to drive the demon away and reclaim the room, or they'd be next! This immersive experience pushed students to work as a team, meticulously searching for clues and combining their problem-solving skills. Their ultimate triumph came with the discovery of the elusive doll, freeing Isabella from the demon's grasp.
The Educational Benefits of the Escape Room Adventure:
Though a thrilling adventure for our students, the escape room was also a rich opportunity for skill development. Participants built confidence when meeting new people and significantly enhanced their communication and teamwork skills. The challenges encouraged critical thinking and a deeper understanding of the value of diverse contributions in problem-solving. It also provided practical experience in time management and analytical thinking, demonstrating education can be fun!
8K1 Food Technology
As part of our Tastes of Mexico unit in Food Technology, students took on the challenge of making vegetable paella—and the results were absolutely delicious!
Everyone worked independently and showed fantastic focus and creativity in the kitchen.
Well done, 8K1!
