Students in Mrs. Hilaire's 3rd grade class visited our enrichment room during math class for a parachute design challenge. Students used the engineer design process to explore the concepts of air resistance (drag) and gravity. Using Flip Grid, a video recording tool, students paused to reflect on possible problems that may arise during the construction and testing phases. During testing, students recorded their trials and then learned how to take the average of their data. They then compared designs and came to conclusions as to why certain designs worked better than others. Thank you Mrs. Hilaire for sharing your students and Mrs. Stettner for the great technology tools!
One of our Valley View students is currently learning about exponents. He decided to use the idea behind volume to explain the math behind exponents. Using our 3D printer, he modeled 4 different sized cubes on Tinkercad and printed 4 cubes, all while practicing his multiplication skills.
Third grade students created an artistic yet meaningful spin on providing book reviews. Students tied meaningful objects to books they finished reading and created a #Bookbento Book Review.
All 3rd grade students embarked on a learning journey into... China! "Congratulations, you are hired!", were words they heard their first day of this extension project. Students worked in research groups in assigned roles: they became chefs, business owners, zoologists, government employees, party planners, travel agents, and news reporters. In their assigned roles, students worked together to research interesting facts about China in order to produce final research products that pertained to their roles: restaurant menus, arts and crafts product descriptions, endangered species fact lists, cultural event invitations, travel brochures, and news reports on Chinese inventions.

12/8/16- STEM CLUB: Biomimicry
What do our 3rd Grade STEM Club, octopuses, and camouflage have in common?
Why Biomimicry of course!
Biomimicry is defined as innovation inspired by nature. We have discussed various forms of ways humans have taken ideas from nature and adapted this in order to solve real world problems.
Our 2nd set of 3rd graders have ventured into the world of biomimicry with a stem challange: recreating the idea of how an octopus and cephalpods camouflage using their chromataphores.
10/03/16- Coding Club
At the beginning of the year, third and fourth grade students were invited to participate in Coding Club, hosted by our technology teacher Mrs. Stettner and enrichment teacher Mrs. Viteri. To view projects and club pictures, please visit the technology page.
09/19/16- Novel Writing
Third and fourth grade students have begun their tedious but enriching journey into the world of novel writing. They will participate in National Novel Writing Month this November and publish their very own novel.
